THE VASOCONSTRICTOR QUESTION

Pro and Ultra include phenylephrine, a vasoconstrictor that narrows local blood vessels. That helps on most procedures. Over a vein you need to see and access, some providers prefer a formula without it.

NO VASOCONSTRICTOR

ELITE

Lidocaine 30% + Tetracaine 7%, with no phenylephrine and no benzocaine. About 20-minute onset, 1 to 3 hours of working time.

PRO

Triple-agent BLT with phenylephrine 0.5%. About 15-minute onset, 2 to 4 hours. Whether to use it over an access site is a clinical decision for your protocol.

IV START APPLICATION

    PICK THE SITE FIRST

    Assess and choose the vein before applying anything. Consider numbing a second site if the first attempt may not succeed.

    APPLY A SMALL AMOUNT

    A thin layer over a small area of intact skin at the site. Leave it uncovered.

    WAIT DURING INTAKE

    About 15 minutes for Pro or 20 for Elite, while you take vitals and prepare the line.

    REMOVE, PREP, STICK

    Wipe the cream away completely, then do your standard antiseptic prep before the needle.

ADULT PATIENTS

This guide covers adults. Children need their own protocol and product choice; benzocaine and prilocaine have both been associated with methemoglobinemia.

SCREEN FOR ALLERGIES

Ask about reactions to numbing products or dental anesthetic. Benzocaine and tetracaine are esters; lidocaine is an amide. See the science page.

IV NUMBING QUESTIONS

Can numbing cream be used before an IV?+
Yes. A licensed provider can apply a small amount of topical anesthetic over the chosen site, wait for it to take effect, then remove it and prep the skin as usual before the stick.
Which MediCaine tier is best for IV starts?+
Elite has no vasoconstrictor, which some providers prefer over a vein they need to access. Pro contains phenylephrine; whether to use it over an access site is your clinical call.
How long before the stick should it go on?+
About 15 minutes for Pro and about 20 for Elite. Remove it completely before antiseptic prep.
